The short answer is yes. Cedar will naturally turn gray when exposed to the sun’s UV radiation. However your cedar planter will be well equipped to last for many years even with the gray look. This grayed appearance is a very popular look right now and you don’t even have to do anything special to achieve it.
What if I don’t want to lose the natural cedar look?
Fortunately, we do have some options to combat this graying/weathering effect. One option is to use a natural oil type finish like Tung Oil or Linseed Oil to protect the cedar wood. This will have the effect of maintaining the beauty and luster of your planter. Tung and Linseed Oil finishes do not come without maintenance. They are often called “maintenance” finishes for this reason. As time goes on, the oil will need to be reapplied. Usually, it is only needed once a season however.
The second option is to use a sealant type finish to protect the wood. An excellent example of a plant safe sealant for this application would be something like Thompson’s WaterSeal. This product uses a waxy type film on top of the wood to provide a protective barrier for the cedar. This finish will often last for the season before needing another application. Note: Cedar treated with Thompson’s WaterSeal will likely still gray in color over time. It’s effect will slow the graying though.
The last option would be to use an exterior rated wood stain. (Think deck stain or something similar.) These products are able to block the UV radiation and maintain your cedar’s natural redish-orange look for years to come.
Note: Interior stains should not be used in an outdoor application like a planter. It does not have the protective qualities of the exterior rated stains. It will also fade and loose its effect much faster than the exterior stain.
